Obituary of J.W. Hively

W.J. Hively was born Sept. 13, 1848, in Roanoke Co., Va., and departed this life Feb. 20, 1913, his age being 64 yrs., 5 months and 7 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Meadows in Dec., 1866, and lived happily together 16 years; to this union was born 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls.

On the 10th day of Oct.1882, the messenger of death came and called her to the high land of Heaven to wear the robe and crown, leaving her husband and seven children to mourn their loss. Since then Mary, their oldest daughter, was called home, and she went shouting for joy telling them all to be ready.

Bro. Hively was married the second time to Miss C.E. Wease Jan.4, 1883, and to this union was born 3 children 1 boy and 2 girls; he was the father of 10 children in all.

In 1866 he united with the M.E. Church and was a member of it for a number of years; after which he joined the Missionary Baptist Church. He was licensed to preach the Gospel in May, 1899, by the Bethel Baptist Church.

Though Bro. Hively was not permitted to preach much on account of being a bad cripple, yet he always kept the fire burning upon the family altar at home, and enjoyed great showers of blessings from his Lord and Master. He always seemed to have a revival of religion in his heart wherever you met him, he loved to talk of God and his wonderful grace.

He was an invalid for several years and while even lying upon his bed of affliction he often called his friends in to sing and pray and enjoy the great blessings of God with him, and at various times he was known to say to his family, "That when he was released here, that he would be forever at rest in the glory world, with white robed Angels and the just made perfect, washed in the blood of the Lamb."

While we feel our loss of a brother and a friend we are assured of the fact that it is his eternal gain.

He requested that the writer should preach his funeral at his burial, which was done in the presence of a large and sympathizing congregation and the remains laid to rest in the Payne burying ground.

The following hymn is one that was selected by Bro. Hively to be sung at his burial.

Why should our tears in sorrow flow,
When God recalls his own.
And bids them leave a world of woe,
For an immortal crown.
Is not even death a gain
To those whos life to God was given
Gladly to earth their eyes they close,
To open them in Heaven.
Their toils are passed their work is done,
And they are fully blessed.
They have fought the fight the victory is won,
And entered into rest.
Then let our sorrows cease to flow,
God has recalled his own,
But let our hearts in every woe,
Still say: Thy will be done.

Rev. J. Herbert Smith
